How many files and card-trays do you have in your organisation?

How many files and card-trays do you have in your organisation, files that partly contain the same information? If you recieve for example a change of address, do you know which files to update? And if you want to do that by means of the Internet, how does that connect to your systems and processes? What is the structure of the whole of automated processes in your organisation? Is that characterised by separate applications with still several manual links or sometimes no link at all?

Did you take account of all processes, automated systems and files, and did you examine them on consistency? How much consistency is there present in your management information? How many times is there someone in your business making decisions without taking in account the relevant information available in other places in your business?

Is the development dictated by technicalities (supplier) or do you have grip on the developments, starting from the information needs in your company or organisation, information needs determined by the business processes?  Do you make your choices for suppliers or COTS software based on a clear and agreed upon Program of Requirements?

An information architecture stands for an integral set of information systems, coherent with the business. Data will be stored once and used plural, based on the information requirements of your organisation. Your company strategy can be based on information technology, however it will not be stipulated by IT.
